TIMELESS

Instruments of planetary motion

“Two possibilities exist: Either we are alone in the Universe or we are not.

Both are equally terrifying.”

About Me

From my workshop based in Noosa, Australia I have been producing these Orreries for a number of years. The first one was built from cardboard as a project for my son and over the years it has evolved into a piece that has now been sent all over the world. Each piece is hand assembled with care and attention to detail. I hope to keep the wonder of these marvelous objects alive for future generations to come.

name

“An Orrery is an instrument for visualizing Planetary motion.”

Contemporary design

Designed with the use of modern materials and techniques in mind. Clear acrylic, medium density fiberboard and laser cutting have been used to produce a design that is simple while maintaining its intricate and interesting nature.

Accurate Movement

The most accurate I have produced and taking advantage of the cutting techniques, I have been able to cut fine gears in almost perfect ratios giving a variance of only minutes per year. Take a look at the table here for details.

Polished stone planets

A beautiful set of semi precious polished stone spheres. Calcite (Sun), Tiger Iron (Mercury), Picture Jasper (Venus), Sodalite (Earth), White Howlite (The Moon). Each one being unique and interesting in appearance.

Brass detail

Brass is used to detail the finished piece. For the center mechanism, Planet support and footings it is a traditional choice and gives the Orrery some old world charm.

Crafted wooden box

Each Orrery comes in a hand crafted wooden box specifically designed for safe storage and transport. With finger jointed edges, brass hinges and finished with Scandinavian oil it will protect your orrery for years to come.

Hand assembled

Due to the nature of the materials used each Orrery is carefully hand assembled to ensure proper fit and function. Planetary position is set to the current date.

“Called an ‘Orrery’ after Charles Boyle, 4th Earl of Orrery for whom it was first made.”
